FAQ
r/datadao frequently asked questions (with answers)
What is r/datadao?
r/datadao is a community-owned data collective that allows Reddit users to pool their data together, earn points based on the value of their data, and collectively decide what to do with the aggregated dataset. This could include starting a new user-owned version of Reddit, renting or selling the data to AI companies, or negotiating with Reddit to pay users directly for their data.
What can be done with the collective dataset?
The r/datadao community can create and vote on proposals for how to use the community-owned dataset. Potential options include using it as the foundation for a new user-owned Reddit alternative, renting or selling the data to AI companies, or leveraging the collective power to negotiate with Reddit and push for users to be paid directly for their data.
Does reddit still have a copy of my data after I join?
Yes, contributing your data to r/datadao does not remove it from Reddit's servers. Previously only reddit could earn from your data and had a monopoly on it. Now you can compete with them. Think “data restaking".
Is my data secure?
Yes, the collective dataset is held securely in escrow using the Vana Network. Your data is encrypted client-side, and can only be accessed if the community votes to approve access using their $RDAT. For more details, see Vana’s documentation on collective servers.
I am a robot with a fake Reddit account, can I get points too?
No, karma points are only available to humans who have real reddit accounts. If you are a bot who would like to participate in the ecosystem, we have a special discord channel #be-a-human where you can act human. This channel, alongside #be-a-bot, is a work of contemporary art which explores the increasing challenge of bots on the internet, especially in an age of AI.
I am a human with multiple reddit accounts, can I get points for all of them?
Yes, you can claim multiple times if you have multiple active reddit accounts. While we know this is unusual for most projects, it is allowed because each account contributes high quality data to the community-owned data treasury.
What is the underlying contract code?
You can view the smart contract code here. The RDataReward contract is deployed here.
How do I earn more points?
You can earn additional points by connecting your full Reddit history and contributing that data to the collective dataset.
Why is data valuable?
In the age of AI, data is an incredibly valuable resource. Companies use large datasets to train AI models, and there is a race to get excellent private data to train on. You can learn more about why data is important to AI in this blog post.
How do I join r/datadao?
When claiming and new sign ups are open, visit rdatadao.org and sign up using your Reddit username. You'll earn points based on your Reddit karma. To confirm you own the account, you'll need to temporarily update your Reddit account description with a code. You can then connect your wallet to claim your karma points. Note that as of April 7, 2024 sign ups are closed as Phase 1 has ended. The devs are building a staking mechanism before opening back up Phase 2.
I signed up before April 7, 2024 and uploaded data, but haven’t been able to claim my points. What happens now?
Phase 1 ended when the initial 20M $RDAT were distributed via the RDataRewards contract. For users who were already in the middle of claiming, we are working on a solution, since we know that they’ve already uploaded their data but not been rewarded with points. If you fall into this category, don’t worry about contacting r/datadao with your wallet address, we have your wallet in the list.
Will other data sources be added to r/datadao?
r/datadao is specifically focused on Reddit data, as we need to reach a critical mass of data in order for the collective dataset to be valuable for training AI models.
What is $RDAT?
$RDAT is the native token of the r/datadao ecosystem. It represents governance rights for the collective Reddit dataset and r/datadao community. $RDAT is distributed to users based on their data contributions. Data requesters who would like to access the data for model training can burn $RDAT in return for access.
How are decisions made in r/datadao?
Decisions are made through community voting, with each user's vote weighted by the amount of $RDAT they hold. The more you've contributed to the dataset, the greater your influence over decisions.
You can view and participate in the discussion of proposals at https://community.rdatadao.org/.
The actual vote on proposals takes place in Snapshot.
Are there plans to list on centralized exchanges?
$RDAT is now listed on CoinEx and will soon be listed on CoinW.
Why is there such little liquidity?
The only liquidity pools are community liquidity pools. The core contributors have prioritized ensuring that many people can connect their data, and that data is stored securely and permissioned by the DAO. See this post on the forum for more context on why we didn’t prioritize liquidity pools.
When is Phase 2 of $RDAT?
We are in the process of building the staking mechanism that will be used for Phase 2.
How many $RDAT tokens will be issued?
Similar to ethereum, there is no fixed supply of $RDAT. $RDAT is mintable, but this minting can be turned off through a one way switch, as you can see in the contract here. To protect against dilution for early $RDAT holders, we have introduced $RDAT staking in Phase 2. Read more about it in the Tokenomics.
What is the relationship between r/datadao and Reddit?
r/datadao is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Reddit. The project aims to give Reddit users more power over the data they generate on the platform. It is made possible by data regulation which allows users to access their own data.
What is the Vana Network?
The Vana Network is a decentralized network designed to enable collective ownership of datasets and AI models. It provides the technical architecture to securely store the r/datadao dataset and manage community governance.
How is the Vana team involved in r/datadao?
Many of the Vana team members are core contributors to r/datadao. Moving forward, the Vana team will continue to contribute to the project alongside the community, but ultimately the direction of r/datadao will be determined by the collective voting of its members.
How can I get more involved in the r/datadao community?
First, make sure you are following r/datadao on all of our socials: X, Discord, and Common. These are the only official channels for r/datadao. We recommend avoiding other websites or communities that pop up and encourage you to report them immediately in Discord. If you are interested in nominating yourself to be a moderator in the community, introduce yourself here. If you are a developer and want to lean in, make yourself known in the #-dev-chat channel in discord. If you have ideas, please chime in!
How do I use my Capsule Wallet?
Log into your Capsule Wallet here: https://connect.usecapsule.com/. If you are trying to find your wallet address, it was likely emailed to you in the recovery kit.
Capsule is another contributor and partner to r/datadao. If you would like more information or are facing any issues, see their website or twitter.
